Cliff and Mary are native
Texans.
Born
near Abilene, in central west Texas, Cliff is quick to say that cow
dogs would have been pretty handy when he had to go get the cows
up from the pasture on foot as a kid. He put his daughter,
Jana, on a horse at the tender age of 2 and soon added horse
shoeing and training to farming. Jana ended up in college on
a rodeo scholarship.
Cliff, no stranger to the cattle
business, ran a cattle processing crew for around 3 years. He said they ran about a half million
through the chutes for the feed lots. The crew branded, dehorned,
doctored, wormed, castrated - whatever the feed lots wanted.
Cliff became interested
in the working ranch dog about 16 years ago. He attended
several clinics, visited breeders and chose the Border Collie for
their working abilities and intelligence.
Cliff and Mary have a
combined family of 4 daughters and 3 sons.
Some
of their children live near them and when Cliff and Mary are out
of town, they tend to the cattle and dogs.
